The Miami County Board of Elections said a $90,000 increase in its 2016 budget can be attributed primarily to a special election to fill the seat of Congressman John Boehner along with 2016 being a presidential election year.

Board Director Bev Kendall and Deputy Director Eric Morgan met with the commission Oct. 27 as part of the commission’s 2016 county budget meetings.

The date for the election to replace Boehner was set Sunday by Gov. John Kasich for June 7. The primary vote will be part of the March primary.

During the budget discussion, Commissioner John “Bud” O’Brien asked for a meeting with election officials to discuss the purchase of electronic poll books for the elections office.

O’Brien said he realized the state would pay for 85 percent of the purchase price, but wanted to discuss with the elections officials the lifetime costs of the additional equipment including maintenance and replacements down the road.

The request was relayed to the Board of Elections during its meeting later Oct. 27. Board member Dean Tamplin said he would meet with the commissioners. All other board members can attend, if desired, the board agreed.

The elections board voted Oct. 1 to buy 100 electronic poll books from Elections Systems and Software LLC for $150,865. The state is picking up 85 percent of the cost, with the balance up to the county.

The board also finalized preparations for the Nov. 3 general election approving a contract with the West Milton Rotary. The organization for several years has contracted with the board to deploy and then retrieve the voting machines before and after Election Day.

The contract for the service in this week’s election was $10,598.

In other business, the board told Kendall and Morgan to work with the county prosecutors office on responding to a subpoena for election-related documents.

The question involved the removal of names from documents and a possible confidentiality agreement to protect those names.

The subpoena was part of a suit filed by the Ohio Democratic Party against several elections boards.
