The Miami County Board of Elections voted April 17 to approve paying 10 extra poll workers to be on stay by for use Election Day, if needed.

Elections Director Drew Higgins proposed paying the workers $50 for the day, if they are not needed. If they were called on to help staff the polls, they would be paid the regular Election Day rate.

Higgins said the standby workers were requested after a half dozen trained poll workers called off on Election Day in November. The standby workers will undergo the regular poll worker training.

Elections staff also reported at the April 17 meeting that with two weeks of early voting done, about 300 people had cast ballots in the election office. Along with the ballot requests received by mail, about 775 people were involved so far in early voting.
