A furious comeback by the Troy Trojans fell short last week, as the boys’ basketball team lost on the road at Belmont 72-66. In a game that saw the Trojans only score seven points in the second period, was capped by them scoring 33 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as they fell short in the non-conference game.

Belmont led 26-20 at the half, and took their lead out to 46-33 heading to the fourth. Both teams combined for 59 points in the last eight minutes.

Troy was led in scoring by Ryan McClurg with 21, Austin Persinger added 19 and Romello Yaqub scored 10. Troy connected on seven three’s in the game.

Troy returns to action January 5 at West Carrollton, then hosts Butler January 8 and Tecumseh the following evening.

Troy Boys Bowling- The Trojans edged Greenville 2028-2015 in a GWOC battle last week. Landon Flory led Troy with 189-199, Aaron Stone bowled 203-177, Hayden Jackson rolled a 176-162, Jason Shiltz had a 128-175 and AJ Kendall finished with 100-202.

Troy Girls Bowling- For the Troy girls’ they cruised past Greenville 2130-1565. Jenna Stone led the way with a 208-232, Rachel Darrow had 196-183, Kirsten McMullen 156-171, A’leigha Smith 201, Cassidy McMullen 190, Alyssa Shilt 164, Jennica Funderburg 146.

Troy Hockey- The Troy Trojan Hockey team was playing at Hobart Arena against the Alter Nights in a league match up. Troy was pretty banged up after Saturday nights’ game and were missing 3 players to injuries but battled to a 6-3 victory over the Knights. Caleb Mangas was in the goal for the second night getting some needed ice time.

Alter skated well and scored first at the 3:44 mark to take the lead. Tyler Hess answered on a great shot with the assists going to Michael Hess and Enrique Alejandre. The first ended all knotted up at 1-1 with Troy out shooting Alter 4-2.

Tyler Hess started the second period and was fired up. He scored again two minutes into the second to give Troy the lead for good. Nate Uhlenbrock scored with the assists going to Hess and Alejandre. The second ended with Troy on top 3-1.

The Third period found Troy installing Shaemus Nevin in as goalie and first shot he saw sailed past him on a power play to make it a 3-2 game. AJ Noll applied puck pressure and it paid off when he took the puck away and scored an unassisted goal to make it 4-2 Troy. Noll then found Prestyn Hoefler in front of the goal and Hoefler made it a 5-2 game. With that assist, Noll hit 90 assists for his career tying the Troy high School record. All eyes were on Hess as he took a Charlie Ryan pass and hit his third goal of the game giving him his first hat trick. Alter scored with eight seconds left to make the final score 6-3.

Mangas stopped 15 of 17 shots. Nevin stopped one of the two shots he saw. Noll had one goal and one assist. Uhlenbrock and Hoefler had one goal each. Alejandre had 2 assists. Hess, Charlie Ryan and John Wehrkamp each had one assist.

“This night belonged to Hess with his relentless hustle and determination,: said Troy coach Phill Noll. “Tyler played like he was on a mission with his 3 goals and 1 assist, and was the determining factor with his physical play, his hard skating and his never give up attitude.”

Troy is now 2-0-1 in the league and will take the ice next in Dayton at the Mayor Cup this weekend.
